Nicolas Cage Discusses Face Off Sequel
Spider-Noir star Nicolas Cage has discussed where Face Off 2ย currently stands.ย The follow-up film was announced by Paramount Pictures in the autumn of 2019, with David Permutย credited as executive producer. Oren Uzielย has reportedly been hired to write the script, with Neal Moritzย producing.
Adam Wingardย was announced as the director; however, February saw reports that Wingard had departedย the project, leaving it in search of a new director.
Face Offย is the 1997 sci-fi, thriller and action shake-up by director John Woo, following his 1996 action flick, Broken Arrow.ย The film starsย Cageย as a terroristย hunted by an FBI agent played byย John Travolta, who had just appeared inย Costa-Gavras’ย Mad City. The cat-and-mouse chase takes a bizarre turn when the two undergo an experimental surgery to have their faces surgically removed and swapped.
Grossing $245.7 million worldwide from a budget of $80 million, Woo’s film was the 11th highest-grossing release of 1997 and earned critical acclaim for its leading performances and action, as well as earning an Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing. ย Joan Allen, Gina Gershon, Alessandro Nivola, Dominique Swain, Nick Cassavetes,ย Harve Presnell,ย Colm Feore,ย CCH Pounder, and Thomas Jane co-starred.
Cageย was recently asked about what is happening with the sequel to the cult classicย afterย Wingard leftย the project.
“Listen, Adam and I had a great lunch together at the Smoke House in Burbank, and we had a terrific conversation. We share similar interests. I like what heโs been doing with the Godzilla group, and we talked about one of our favourite supervillains in the old Godzilla movies, which was Hedorah,” the actor explained. “Iโm sure at some point our paths will cross again.”
However, Cage had to stress that when it comes to Face Off 2, as of now, “I have zero idea if itโs going to happen. Iโm the last guy to know anything.”
When speaking of his co-star matching his intensity level throughout the film, Cage shared that Travolta “did a great job in that movie” and following Cage’s departure from the role of the terrorist Castor, Travolta “took the ball and ran with it beyond anyoneโs wildest dreams.”
“He really had fun with it. I like to think that I liberated him a little bit,” Cage beamed. “I set the template, and he riffed on it and took it.”
Cageย has recently appeared in the superhero series, Spider-Noir,ย an adaptation of the Marvel Comics character of the same name and taking place in an alternate universe based on Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. The series is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video now.
