Dog Eat Dog world out there, could easily be one of the many names for Nicholas Cage‘s autobiography but it’s actually the name of his next movie. In Paul Schrader‘s upcoming thriller we get a look at the film’s UK trailer, story of three men who are desperate to keep themselves out of prison at all costs.

It’s hard to believe it’s 40 years since Taxi Driver, 35 years since Raging Bull Paul Schrader the writer behind the classics. When his name associated with the likes De Palma, Scorsese, you know he’s no slouch. His recent stints behind the lens haven’t been too kind with the atrocious The Canyons (which is some quarters getting a Cult status like The Room). Then there was his last collaboration with Cage Cold Dying Of The Lightย which both disavowed any connection to the movie thanks to studio interference. The latest effort Dog Eat Dog Cage has the rights now the pair made a movie they want.

Dog Eat Dog is a gritty contemporary crime thriller about a trio of ex-cons, deep in the underbelly of Cleveland, who are hired for a kidnapping. When the botched abduction goes awry and gets completely out of control, the cons find themselves on the run, vowing to stay out of prison at all costs.

The film premiered at Cannes Film Festival this year to a mixed response though leaning more towards a positive response. You could say the the pair’s recent efforts have a lot to be desired however The Trust (read our review) was one of Cage’s rare strong outings. He does look on good form here next with a good onscreen chemistry with Willem Dafoe who looks like he’s living up to his character’s name ‘Mad Dog’. The film certainly looks darkly comedic, hectic unhinged but do cinephiles still have faith in lead star and director? We do!

Dog Eat Dog is set for 18th November UK cinema release, however the film is playing BFI 60th London Film Festival on 16th October. The film also stars Omar J. Dorsey,Louisa Krause.
