Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins Heads Into Production with a Fresh Take on Mystery Inc.

Netflix is heading back to the beginning of one of pop culture’s most enduring mysteries, with production now officially underway on its live-action Scooby-Doo series.

Titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, the upcoming show will reintroduce the iconic Mystery Inc. gang through a modern, teen-focused lens, exploring how the group first came together. According to Netflix, filming has just begun, marking a major step forward for the long-anticipated adaptation.

The cast includes McKenna Grace as Daphne, alongside Tanner Hagen, Abby Ryder Fortson and Maxwell Jenkins as Shaggy, Velma and Fred, respectively, with longtime Scooby-Doo voice actor Frank Welker returning to voice the beloved dog.

Rather than revisiting familiar territory, the series is set during the gang’s final summer at camp, where old friends Shaggy and Daphne become entangled in a chilling mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. As the stakes escalate, they join forces with Velma, a sharp and scientific outsider, and Fred, the enigmatic new arrival, to uncover the truth.

The eight-episode series will serve as both a prequel and a reimagining, leaning into darker, more character-driven storytelling while still rooted in the franchise’s signature blend of mystery and adventure. It also marks the first time Scooby-Doo has been adapted into a live-action television format, signalling Netflix’s confidence in the property’s cross-generational appeal.

Behind the scenes, the project is led by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, with Greg Berlanti among the executive producers.

With production now in motion and anticipation steadily building, Scooby-Doo: Origins looks set to offer a fresh, slightly darker take on a familiar story, one that finally answers how those meddling kids first got together.
