Netflix Picks – 23rd January 2015
Have you ever sat in front of Netflix and spent so long trying to choose something to watch, that when you finally decide, you have no time left to watch it? ย You are not alone! ย We have searched through the darkest depths ofย Netflixย to bring you the streaming serviceโs hidden gems.
Classic – The Godfather
A classic in the truest sense of the word, Francis Ford-Coppola‘s big screen version of the Mario Puzo novel won 3 oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Marlon Brando. It also regularly tops ‘best film’ lists, and has that rare quality that makes it immensely quotable even for people that haven’t seen the film.A tale of an aging organised crime boss handing over his reign to a reluctant son, the film features some incredible performances from not only Brando, butย Al Pacino as his son, andย Robert Duvall as his consigliere.ย If you haven’t seen it, you really should. Even if you have seen it, have another watch.ย
Musical – Les Misรฉrables
Another multiple oscar winner, but I’m afraid not quite as classic,ย Les Misรฉrables was an international hit upon it’s release early last year. Based on the musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schรถnberg, which in turn is based on the novel by Victor Hugo, the film focuses on Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) who, in 19th Century France, is on the run for a parole violation, and agrees to take care of a factory worker’s daughter. A decision, which I’m sure you’ll realise, changes both of their lives forever. Although not a light watch, the film is full of talent and spectacular voices and is riveting viewing.
Visual Treat – Hero
To say this film is a treat for the eyes is a gross understatement.ย Zhangย Yimou‘s martial arts epic explores a story told from multiple perspectives, leaving the audiences to guess which one is the truthful tale. Colour plays a big part in the film, with each perspective taking on a different hue. The cinematography is ferociously beautiful, withย Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for Love) capturing the essence of the characters in every frame. Of course, that’s not the only thing of note, the martial arts sequences are also wonderfully choreographed, withย Jet Li andย Maggie Cheung superbly showcasing their talents.ย Hero is truly a captivating watch.
Comedy – Swingers
Doug Liman’s snapshot of a group of showbiz wannabes is one of the better male-centred comedies of the last twenty years (yes, I’m talking about The Hangover films). Centred on a group of men trying to distract their love-sick friend, we follow them on their nights out, a trip to Vegas (baby), and many failed attempts at picking up women. The dialogue, written by Jon Favreau (who also stars), is sharp and quick, perfectly complimenting the deadpan, fast-paced delivery ofย Vince Vaughn. The two are wonderful together, and you get a sense that they played off each other whilst shooting. Terrificallyย witty, ย and also starring the excellentย Ron Livingston,ย Swingers is a smart choice for those of you who are so money, you don’t even know it.
