Netflix Originals Review Castlevania Season Two
Last year, Netflix gave us Castlevania. The show packed humour, blood, and vengeance in an extremely short amount of episodes. Although it received great reviews, season one felt like a tease but left plenty of room open for follow-up. After months of anticipation, Season Two of Castlevania dropped on Netflix in October.
The story picks up where we were left off after Sypha and Trevor awaken Alucard in an attempt to stop Dracula’s vengeful war. Alucard, the son of Dracula, joins their efforts while Dracula’s army expands. The arrival of Carmilla, a vampire general, may further Dracula’s lust for human extinction or set him on a path to his own destruction.
Most of our time in Season One was spent with the vampire hunter Trevor Belmont but this time, we see a much larger cast of characters. Carmilla is a clever and fascinating character to watch as she slowly turns Dracula’s council to her bidding. Her personality, critical decision making, and physical appearance reminded me of Lady Death. The more I looked at Carmilla the more I thought of how awesome it would be to watch a Lady Death Netflix series.
Characters aside, the writing of Season Two is even stronger than the former. The foul humour is still present and the dramatic tone is even stronger as loyalty becomes one of the stronger themes of the season. Dracula’s blood thirsty nature seems to be approaching a somewhat lazy apathy that sets some members his council on edge. Allegiance to Dracula becomes tested and he doesn’t know who to trust as the series progresses.
The primary negative of Season Two is the quality of animation. Action sequences are not consistently seamless and look choppy. I imagine that most of the focus on quality went into the game-changing showdown in Episode 7 considering the action sequences in others leave a lot to be desired.
Although the animation should have been far more consistent, Castlevania Season Two will be great to fans of the Season One. Strong writing, new characters, bloody gore almost on par with Hellsing Ultimate, and adult humour will create new fans and leave viewers eager for a new season. Thankfully a new season has already been green-lighted so it’s just a matter of time until we know what happens next.
