Netflix Bringing Back The Dark Crystal, Watch Prequel First Teaser!

If it was 1980’s and your movie had the art of puppetry, there was only one man who could deliver the magic on the big screen (and small too), that’s Jim Henson. Go back to 1982 we had the fantasy offering of The Dark Crystal, 36 years later that slice of kids pop culture is returning! Thanks to Netflix we will have a prequel series called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and today we can have a look at the first teaser

This video is more of a behind the scenes type featurette than any proper footage. The teaser starts off with the late great man himself Henson explaining the difficulty he had created the project and you’ll hear it was one of the projects he was most proud of too. Animatronics maybe a dying artform but in the 1980s Jim Henson’s Creature Shopâ„¢ were pioneers, the leading lights. With many animators going for the CGI option more these days, the end of this video we do get a glimpse into the prequel and they will use animatronics once again.

What we know of the new series are very sketchy but taking the story back to before he Skeksis and the Mystics were unjoined. A good move which will show the conflict slowly brewing, we do however hope those rather odd but cool Landstriders will make an appearance too! Here’s the brief synopsis Netflix have provided…

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discovers the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.

The Dark Crystal has always been one of those underrated movies that deserved better appreciation. If you ask anyone who was a kid in 1980s now (like me) 99% will categorically agree we loved the movie. It was very dark sometimes surreal adventure which never really played to the traditional tropes many expect from a family movie.

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will start shooting this Autumn for a 2018 release. There will be 10 parts and Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. Jim Henson Company will be involved with Jim Henson’s daughter Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford also executive producers.
