MUBI In October Will Be 'Nasty'

A new month has opened it’s door. In October, streaming service MUBI will be a ‘nasty’ month but also one of an outstanding ‘maiden voyages’.

shining a light on the singular vision of Kelly Reichardt. Her latest film, The Mastermind, opens in cinemas on 24th October, and the channel are revisiting her early works with a retrospective featuring Old Joy and River of Grass. There will be a new Maiden Voyages, a collection of six outstanding 2025 debuts from female directors. As Halloween approaches, the channel brings the gore with the Ban This Sick Filth: Video Nasties collection featuring cult horrors The Driller Killer, Night of the Living Dead, Deep Red, and The House by the Cemetery.

AMERICAN OUTSIDER: THE FILMS OF KELLY REICHARDT

Minimalist, understated, and profoundly human, Kelly Reichardt’s films reimagine the road movie, western, and thriller while quietly interrogating American myths and daily life. Spanning three decades, this retrospective includes her rarely seen debut River of Grass (1994) and touchstones such as Old Joy (2006), culminating with the theatrical release of The Mastermind (24th October, 2025) to offer a singular showcase of one of the most distinctive voices in American independent cinema.

INLAND EMPIRE

Inland Empire (2006) is David Lynch at his most labyrinthine and destabilising: a three-hour descent into a hall of mirrors where narrative subsumes to dream logic at every corner. Nikki (Laura Dern) is an actress starring in a cursed film remake which has monumental effects on her identity. As she navigates the shooting and her fractured reality, Nikki encounters strange neighbors, unsettling performances, and recurring motifs that blur the boundaries between her role, her life, and her subconscious.

REDISCOVERED: HOLLYWOOD 90028

Unseen for decades and now restored in stunning 4K, Christina Hornisher’s Hollywood 90028 (1973) emerges as a lost classic of American cinema – an intoxicating fusion of arthouse lyricism and 1970s grindhouse grit. Following a porn cameraman who prowls Los Angeles by night, the film unravels into both a ferocious critique of exploitation culture and a ghostly portrait of the city itself.

Long shrouded in obscurity, Hornisher’s first and only feature – credited under the pseudonym Craig Hansen – has since been championed by filmmakers Sean Baker, Anna Biller, and Ti West. With luminous cinematography by Jean-Pierre Geuens and an unsettling early score by Basil Poledouris, Hollywood 90028 resurfaces as not just a cult legend, but an essential, time-capsule vision of 1970s Los Angeles.

BELLE DE JOUR

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967) stars Catherine Deneuve as Séverine, a bourgeois housewife whose chilly marriage drives her into a secret double life working afternoons in a high-class Parisian brothel. Oscillating between waking reality and elaborate fantasies, Séverine navigates desire, shame, and the contradictions of her own erotic imagination.

Erotic and satirical, the film blurs boundaries between repression and liberation, seeing fantasy as a site of radial resistance against the constraints of patriarchal order.

THE CONVERSATION

Francis Ford Coppola’s suspense ridden The Conversation (1974) sees hired surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) recording the movements of a young couple in San Francisco. What begins as a professional assignment slowly unravels into a moral quagmire, as Harry becomes consumed by paranoia, guilt, and the haunting suspicion that his work has placed lives in danger.

A taut psychological study, the film Channeling the alienation and unease of its Watergate-era milieu, Coppola’s masterpiece of New Hollywood cinema is a taut psychological thriller that exposes the casualties of surveillance.

OH, MOON!

Reha Erdem’s debut Oh, Moon! (1989) is a poetic and haunting tale of childhood solitude and imagination, told through the eyes of eleven-year-old Yekta. She lives with her strict aunts and ailing grandfather in a crumbling island mansion, until dreams and visions propel her in search of a mythical seagull with a child’s head.

Newly restored in 2K from the original 16mm negative, Oh, Moon! shimmers in luminous black and white, blending the influence of French literary and cinematic traditions with surreal lyricism. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Three Continents Festival in 1989, the film lays the foundation for Reha Erdem’s singular, dreamlike voice in Turkish cinema.

FRAGMENTS FOR VENUS

The 30th commission in Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales series, Alice Diop’s short Fragments for Venus, reflects on how Black women have been represented and erased throughout the history Western art. Moving between a museum in Milan and the streets of Brooklyn, the film reclaims the image of the Black female body as subject rather than object, a living Venus of the present.
