MUBI Announce UK Release Date For Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta

A practicing nun looking for something or someone

As Paul Verhoeven‘s Benedetta toured festivals of the world, boutique streaming service MUBI bought the UK and Irish theatrical rights to the film. Until now we had no idea what the release date was going to be and today the streaming service announce it will be 22nd April 2022.

Since the film’s world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, it has been picking up some rather interesting reviews. To many Verhoeven will generally will be known to mainstream fans as the man behind Basic Instinct, RoboCop, Starship Troopers, Total recall and Showgirls. Not realising he was an established filmmaker making various arthouse films likes of Turkish Delight, recently Elle. We can easily say this one will lie more in arthouse, rather than a film about ‘lesbian nuns’.

There is no full UK Trailer yet released, however back in the Summer MUBI did release a short teaser…

Set in the late 17th century and inspired by true events, the film follows a woman who joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a plague ravages the land that surrounds it. Capable of performing miracles from an early age, Benedettaโ€™s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.

Inspired by the bookย Immodest Acts, written by historianย Judith C Brown, the film starsย Virginie Efiraย (Elle, In Bed with Victoria, Sibyl),ย Charlotte Ramplingย (45 Years, Red Sparrow, Swimming Pool),ย Daphnรฉ Patakiaย (Nimic),ย Lambert Wilsonย (The Matrix Reloaded, Catwoman) andย Olivier Rabourdinย (Eastern Boys, Of Gods and Men), and was co-written byย David Birke, who partnered withย Verhoevenย to writeย Elle.

Our genre editor Bradley Hadcroft recently watched the film, we’ll share that review very soon with you.

Benedetta will be in UK and Irish cinemas from 22nd April 2022.
