Michael Drops Last Trailer & Reshoot Details
The original finale of the film was reshot and meant a delayed release date
Ahead of its heavily anticipated release, reports have shared details of the reshoots of Michael, the musical biopic centred on the rise of Michael ‘The King of Pop’ Jackson by writer Jon Logan and director Antoine Fuqua.
The film will star Jackson’s own nephew Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jackson 5’s Jermaine Jackson, in the role of the music superstar charting his beginnings in the band with his brothers, before going on to cover the Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad eras.
Michaelย also stars Nia Long,ย Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi,ย Miles Teller, andย Colman Domingo.
The biopic follows in the wake of several other acclaimed features of the genre, such as Bohemian Rhapsody,ย I Wanna Dance With Somebody,ย Rocketman, andย Elvis.ย It has overseen two release date pushbacks, originally slated for a 3rd October, 2025 date, then 18th April of this year, before being finalised for a 24th April release.
Sources from Varietyย have shared how scandals surrounding Jackson’s life were partially the cause, such as rewrites and reshoots following the child abuse accusations the singer faced beginning in 1993, with claims re-shared in Dark Horizons that the film originally featured a sequence showcasing “Jackson staring at himself in the mirror while police car lights flash behind him.”
It’s also been confirmed that the ensemble cast had to re-meet for 22 days to re-shoot the film’s third act, originally intended to focus on the Chandler family’s allegations against Jackson and the repercussions for the musician’s career and life. Such rework pushed the biopic’s initial $155 million budget to around $170 million. Further reports have assured the Jackson estate has ” shouldered those extra costs” due to its shortcomings in handling a legal settlement around the 1993 case.
Michaelย hits cinemas on April 24th.
