If anyone doesn’t believe in film festivals unearthing future cinematic hits, think again. Every Year Sundance Film Festival proves it’s worth ,2016 was no exception with Birth Of A Nation and Manchester By The Sea. Kenneth Lonergan‘s drama of rejection and potential Awards accolades, now Amazon Studios/Roadside Attractions (Studiocanal in UK) have released the film’s U.S Trailer. Check it out…
Kenneth Lonergan for a long time has established himself as one of the best film writers with Gangs Of New York probably his most notable script. His time behind the camera has proven critical though troubled thanks to problems with distributors and the film’s preferred cut. Thanks to Martin Scorsese his highly underrated Margaret got a release with a preferred (3 hour) cut 5 years after it was filmed in 2010. Lonergan had similar problems with his debut film You Can Count On Me too, however his latest film looks will get a better fare.
In Manchester By The Sea Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is a brooding, irritable loner who works as a handyman for a Boston apartment block. One damp winter day he gets a call summoning him to his hometown, north of the city. His brother’s heart has given out suddenly, and he’s been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and doubts about raising a teenager weren’t enough, his return to the past re-opens an unspeakable tragedy.
Whilst Lonergan’s films may not be first choices for your average general cinephile, you can’t deny his talent behind the camera too. Films that connect through a similar connection of death and how it impacts on our lives plus how it could change our own life paths.
Manchester By The Sea doesn’t arrive in UK&Ireland until 2017 (possibly 13th January), with USA getting a limited cinema release 18th November. Co-starring Michelle Williams, Lucas Hedges, Gretchen Mol, Tate Donovan, Kara Hayward and Erica McDermott.
