LIFF 2012: UK Trailer For Mike Newell’s Great Expectations

Fresh from it’s world premier screening at Toronto Film Festival last week today we’ve received the UK trailer for Mike Newell’s retelling of the classic Charles Dicken’s novel Great Expectations from Lionsgate. Jeremy Irvine (Warhorse, Now Is Good) stars as pip a young orphan who is given a chance to rise through the high society of London thanks to a mysterious benefactor.

When it comes to an adaptation of literature classics such as Great Expectations I do tread with caution simply due to the amount of times these great books get made for the big screen (&small screen), what new can they provide? After watching Anna Karenina at the weekend nother classic story which has seen numerous retellings it’s really opened my eyes and it looks like Newell has taken a darker more gritter route. As people like to say, it’s good to be different! This new trailer does provide new footage as well quotes from a recent pre-Tiff screening in London last week and it looks like Great Expectations will deliver the goods.

Great Expectations will close 56th BFI London Film Festival on October 21st before it openes in UK&Ireland on November 30th. The film stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Holliday Grainger Robbie Coltrane, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, Tamzin Outhwaite, David Walliams with Elizabeth Karlsen, Stephen Woolley (Made in Dagenham, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, The Crying Game), the film has been adapted for the screen by David Nicholls.

Synopsis:Young orphan Pip is given a chance to rise from his humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Moving through London’s class ridden world as a gentleman, Pip uses his new found position to pursue the beautiful Estella; a spoilt heiress he’s loved since childhood.
