The new French drama is based on Albert Camus 1942 debut book of the same name. The Stranger ( L’Étranger or The Outsider in the UK), follows the emotionally numb 30 something Meursault. Living in 1938 Algeria who is drawn into a murky world that results in murder’

This is a classic existentialist which stars Benjamin Voisin in the lead role. He is joined by Rebecca Marder, Pierre Lottin, Denis Lavant, and Swann Arlaud. Going by the reviews since it’s last year’s Venice Film Festival, Ozon might captured a literature masterpiece perfectly.

Synopsis | Algiers, 1938. Meursault, a quiet and unassuming man in his early thirties, attends his mother’s funeral without shedding a tear. The next day, he begins a casual affair with Marie, a colleague, and quickly slips back into his routine. But his seemingly indifferent existence is soon disrupted by his neighbour, Raymond Sintès, who draws Meursault into his murky affairs — until, on one blisteringly hot day, a tragic event unfolds on a sun-drenched beach.

Based on Albert Camus’ groundbreaking 1942 debut novel L’Étranger (published as The Outsider in the UK), which explores themes of human cruelty, existentialism, and post-colonialism, this celebrated French classic has captivated readers in over 75 languages worldwide. François Ozon’s absorbing and stylish film adaptation reimagines the story for a contemporary audience.
