For the past decade he’s been a man with a ‘particular set of skills’ or go to guy for the mature action man, A Monster Calls, he’s a Tree. In the film’s new UK trailer those skills become branches as he may look for you and find you but he won’t kill you, he will probably help you…
In the latest promo clearly shows why this film is one of the most anticipated films of 2016, a visual unique story that reminds us Steven Spielberg‘s The BFG isn’t the only film with a ‘be friendly giant’.
A visually spectacular drama from acclaimed director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible), A Monster Calls is based on the award-winning children’s fantasy novel. 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) attempts to deal with his mother’s (Felicity Jones) illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that explore courage, loss, and faith. Also featuring Liam Neeson who will star in performance-capture and voiceover as the nocturnally visiting monster of the title, and Sigourney Weaver as the maternal grandmother.
The Orphanage clearly showcased Bayona’s talent as a film maker. We always seem to connect Spanish horror with Del Toro and Almodovar with arthouse, Bayona has proven he’s equally comfortable not just in horror but drama like in The Impossible. This looks a visual treat tone wise is looks more in line with The BFG with a lot a big nod towards Pan’s Labyrinth. It looks imagination plays a big part of plot which plays nicely as a fantasy playing on our young protagonists emotions with the real pain of illness and bullying helping provoke the visceral fears.
A Monster Calls set possibly for an October/Autumn release date featuring an all-star cast including Liam Neeson (narrator and The Monster), Felicity Jones, Toby Kebbell, Sigourney Weaver as well as newcomer Lewis MacDougall.
