Leonardo DiCaprio in Talks to Join Heat 2 Amid Budgetary Issues
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in Columbia Pictures' "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood"
In light of budgetary issues, the highly anticipated Heat 2 is seeking to add Leonardo DiCaprio to its growing cast.
The film, directed by Oscar nominee Michael Mann, had an initial budget of $200 million. The cost has since lowered to $170 million, with Warner Bros. seeking to make the film, albeit at a lower budget.
There’s very little to justify a big budget film these days, but an A-list star is one of them. According to Puck’s Matt Belloni, Mann has had “conversations” with DiCaprio about starring. The Titanic actor could be the answer to the film’s problems, as his presence could push it into production.
Following 1995’s Heat, the film could act as a partial prequel, based on the 2022 crime novel written by Mann and Meg Gardiner. Set in 1988, the book follows Detective Vincent Hanna hunting down a cruel gangster. Simultaneously, Neil McCauley, Chris Shiherlis and Michael Cerrito plan their next heist.
DiCaprio could play any of these characters in Heat 2. While he hasn’t officially signed on to the project, playing a younger Neil McCauley (originally played by Robert DeNiro) seems likely.
Heat, also directed by Mann, grossed $187 million against a $60 million budget, and starred DeNiro alongside Al Pacino as Hanna. Alongside its commercial success, the film is widely acclaimed, revered for its complex characters and realistic portrayals.
