With the recent success of Bohemian Rhapsody it was only the matter of time someone was going to make a David Bowie biopic. Nearly 3 years after the death of the charismatic Rock God , Stardust has found it’s Ziggy …Johnny Flynn.
Actor-Musician Flynn will be known for his role in the underrated Beast, as well as his Television roles in Vanity Fair and Les Miserables. He will play a young Bowie with The Hunger Games star Jenna Malone playing his then wife Angie. Glow star Marc Maron is set to play Bowie’s publicist.
Stardust is set to document Young Bowie’s first trip to the United States in 1971. The trip is said to inspired Bowie in the invention of his greatest ever alter ego…Ziggy Stardust.
I Am Slave director Gabriel Range is set to direct with Christopher Bell (The Last Czars) writing the script. Salon Pictures is set produce who aim to take the film to Berlin Film Festival this month to gain a distributor.
The film will include performances from Bowie or will it?
As the news dropped online about Johnny Flynn is set to play David Bowie, Duncan Jones Bowie’s only son slammed the news.
It seems the project at this stage has had no one from Bowie’s family or Estate involved or even give their blessing. Jones made his anger clear via his Twitter account made it clear the film will not include any of his father’s music.
Im not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn't know.
Im saying that as it stands, this movie won't have any of dads music in it, & I can't imagine that changing. If you want to see a biopic without his music or the families blessing, thats up to the audience.— Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) January 31, 2019
Jones has every right to be angry especially if your going to use someone’s art, like their music you have to get permission to use it. In his tweet he has said that won’t change even if Stardust’s reps approach him.
If it does go ahead they said the film will be in the vein of My Week With Marilyn. A spur of a moment biopic rather than a biopic in the traditional sense. They hope to start principal photography in June this year, which means next 4 or 5 months will be vitally important for the film.
Flynn is currently appearing in London’s West End with Kit Harrington in Sam Sheppard’s True Joy. His next film project is Working Title’s upcoming Jane Austen adaptation Emma with Anya Taylor-Joy.
What’s your thoughts on a David Bowie biopic? Is it a money grab or a welcomed film?
