John Foo waiting for his target in Last Resort

Last Resort aka ULTIMA RATIO or Die Hard in a Bank, not quite beat for beat to the all time classic but constant familiarity clearly evident. Striking star Jon Foo, a skilled resistance fighter has some presence and decent combat moves is fighting for his family when they are held captive by military thieves.

Michael (Foo) is having marriage hurdles with wife Kim (Julaluck Ismalone) throwing around divorce papers leaving him watching cartoons on the couch as she runs off the the bank with their eleven year old daughter Anna (Angelina Ismalone) to sort our financial affairs at the bank.

Things suddenly turn treacherous when armed masked men storm in demanding instructions to the manager to open a vault or something like that. Motives are not really clear, there’s shouting, shrieking, clanging and gunfire.

Kim and Anna are part of the kidnapping situation so when Michael is alerted he jumps up putting the cartoon viewing on hold to go directly into the fire ‘assisting’ police as they clumsily assess the perimetre.

He has a certain set of skills and secret work history that is put into effective use when storming the bank, eventually taking out the gang one by one John McClane style.

An eventual hand-to-hand showdown looms with criminal boss Cooper, as played by Bold and the Beautiful veteran Clayton Norcross) who also happens to be an ex-colleague of Michael, with bad blood ties fuelling their mutual rage.

The elevator musical score is rough, adding nothing to the thrills and spills.

Filmed in Thailand on an obvious budget, this has a few decent action scenes and Jon Foo as mentioned, seems fully choreographed, a really quite igniting presence in motion, the film itself is an underwhelming, unashamed Die Hard rip off from multiple angles. It’s even set around Christmas time.

With more plot originality and better scripting, erasing often groan inducing dialogue, Last Resort would be so much more enjoyable on a B-movie level.
