Kevin Feige Reveals Details On The Future Of The X-Men In The MCU
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, shared some details about the upcoming untitled X-Men movie for the MCU while attending a press roundtable for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Disney acquired 20th Century Fox back in 2019 when they merged, which returned beloved characters such as the Fantastic Four and X-Men to Marvel Studios, which finally allowed them for use in their movies.
We’ve slowly been seeing the return of X-Men in the MCU with Patrick Stewart returning as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97, the hint at Kamala Khan being a mutant, and of course, Deadpool and Wolverine, which featured a multitude of X-Men characters and was a send-off to the Fox era of X-Men. It’s also known that there will be some returning characters/actors from the Fox era of X-Men that will be making an appearance in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, which releases in 2026.
The one thing that has yet to make an appearance is a full-fledged X-Men movie. With the updates that Kevin Feige provided, we finally have an idea of where this movie is heading. Deadline first reported that Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier was the top choice to direct the X-Men movie, and Kevin Feige was able to finally confirm that he indeed will be the director for X-Men, and he also had this to say: “It’s official, Jake Schreier is doing X-Men for us, and we’re very, very lucky… And we’re very, very lucky to have him and very excited to have him. And so we’re beginning. It’s all starting now. The script’s underway.”
With Jake Schreier attached to direct and with a script underway, we’re closer to a new X-Men film finally becoming reality. The success of Thunderbolts* played a part in Schreier getting the gig, but also Kevin Feige trusts in his abilities as a filmmaker beyond that. Kevin Feige was able to confirm that the X-Men movie would be a “very youth-orientated, focused and cast movie,” another reason why Jake Schreier was just the perfect fit for the role, as he has a “pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic.”
The plot details for the movie are still being kept under wraps by Kevin Feige, as he’s still not yet ready to reveal what the film may entail, but he made it known that although “there have been more X-Men movies than there were Spidey movies or Fantastic Four movies,” there are still a lot of stories from the comics that they can grab from, and according to Comic Book, he’s not opposed to revisiting previously done storylines and allowing them to be tackled by a different creative direction and with a new cast for the MCU.
It’s still not known yet what the release window will be for the upcoming X-Men movie, but it’s safe to say that it’ll be releasing in cinemas once The Multiverse Saga has come to an end with Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, which will bring Phase Six to a close, which has only now begun with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which drops in cinemas on 24th July.
