Jurassic World: Rebirth Sequel Confirmed With Cast & Director Set To Return
Exciting news for fans of the Jurassic World franchise, as it is being reported (via Dark Horizons) that Jurassic World: Rebirth director Gareth Edwards will be returning for the film’s sequel, along with main cast members Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.
A sequel to Jurassic World: Rebirth was inevitable as the film grossed an impressive $900 million worldwide. So it only seems right for Universal Pictures to get those involved with the blockbuster hit back for the sequel. There is no confirmation yet as to whether David Koepp will return to the write the project, and there are no plot details to share at this time. However, Steven Spielberg will return as an executive producer.
Universal had already taken a potential sequel into account when making the first film, as alterations were made to the ending during production. Originally, Aliโs character was supposed to have died, but the decision was made to save the character so he could be used for future projects, a choice was has most certainly paid off in the long run.
Though the core trio of actors are poised to return, it is highly unlikely that the family from Rebirth’s secondary storyline will also come back. The reaction to their subplot was one of the more divisive elements of the film, so that may be reason enough for the studio to primarily focus on Johansson, Bailey, and Ali.
A major difference, and potential benefit, for the sequel is that Edwards will be involved from the very start and will develop the story from scratch, unlike Rebirth, where he arrived very late into the creative process. Though the newest film didn’t reach the box office success of its predecessor, Jurassic World: Dominion, Rebirth still managed to perform incredibly well due to its smaller budget and also received better reviews compared to the previous Jurassic World sequels.
