Josh Boone Reflects On His Experiences Making X-Men Spin-Off New Mutants

New Mutants - Josh Boone talks

Whilst promoting his new film Regretting You across the pond, director Josh Boone has been speaking about his experiences on 2020’s New Mutants, a spin-off from the X-Men series and a film that was caught up in a studio being bought, new management and the pandemic, all contributing to the film not quite working as Boone – and fans – had hoped.

Geek outletย The Direct recently spoke with the filmmaker, who described his experiences as “traumatic” as the studio was busy with its acquisition of Disney, as well as the notable hits in cinemas during the pandemic, saying:

โ€œItโ€™s so hard because it was so traumatic. The studio was sold, and we hit a pandemic. The studio was sold during the shooting, and then the pandemic happened when they decided to release it. And it just was such a, I had a wonderful time. I love the cast so much, but making thatโ€ฆIt took so many years, and it was so unfulfilling, ultimately. We didnโ€™t really get to make the movie we wanted to make. We made half the movie we wanted to make. And the release was so compromised by the pandemicโ€ฆ Iโ€™d rather just never do it again, just to be honest,โ€

Indeed, best laid plans were severed, too, as there was talk of Antonio Banderas lined up to play Emmanuel da Costa, the father of Zagaโ€™s Sunspot, as well as possibly Mad Men star Jon Hamm as Mister Sinister in a post-credits scene that didn’t materialise.

Anya Taylor-Joy,ย Maisie Williams,ย Charlie Heaton,ย Alice Braga,ย Henry Zaga, andย Blu Hunt were among the main cast of New Mutants, which was eventually released in 2020 after countless reshoots and all the other forces at play during production and post-production.

The New Mutants is available to stream on Disney+.
