The tension is high in the thrilling new trailer for Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut, The Gift. This isn’t too surprising when you consider it comes from Blumhouse, the team behind The Purge, Insidious, and Sinister. Although Edgerton has a solid career in front of the camera, he has been writing and producing for a few years now, and is combining all of his talents to become a quadruple threat (writer, producer, director, actor) in The Gift.

Synopsis Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall) are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo (Edgerton) at first, but after a seemingly coincidental series of encounters proves troubling, a horrifying secret from their past is uncovered after nearly 20 years. As Robyn learns the unsettling truth about what happened between Simon and Gordo, she starts to question: how well do we really know the people closest to us, and are past bygones ever really bygones?

Judging from the trailer, The Gift looks set to be intriguing psychological thriller, with Edgerton looking particularly creepy. Here’s hoping that Jason Bateman can stay away from playing his ‘everyman under pressure’ character he does so well (but does to death) and really deliver.

The Gift is released in UK cinemas on 7th August.
