Cannes is upon us, must be time for another Woody Allen film and tonight we get a look at the first trailer for Irrational Man, which Joaquin Phoenix  Suffering from despair.

When it comes to Woody Allen films what you see is what you get, you know what to expect, sometimes he surprises us but in the case of Irrational Man its familiar grounds.

Phoenix takes the lead role as an alcoholic college professor looking for an existential meaning to his life, but things look up for him in the form of one of his students. He strikes a friendship with a student played by Emma Stone however he gets involved with an happily married fellow teacher (Parker Posey) but what path should he follow?

As ever fantastic cast ensembled, gorgeous cinematography from regular DP Darius Khondji, as we’ll say  the same things until his final film. It’s a case of same old same old, but this one has the quirkiness in the dialogue  with an interest to see how Stone and Phoenix chemistry develops. We’re used to seeing Phoenix in PT Anderson  or Spike Jonze films, Irrational Man does suggest he’ll rise and conquer deliver something intriguing and unique with Parker Posey maybe the dark horse of the cast.

The film is set to premier at next month’s Cannes Film Festival with USA gettting an 24th July release date, no UK&Irish date confirmed yet. The film co-stars Jamie Blackley, Ethan Phillips, Meredith Hagner,David Aaron Baker and Ben Rosenfield.
