Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock The Next In The Muppets Universe To Get Big Screen Adaptation?
With The Muppets about to make a big return to the big screen it is no surprise attention will now focus will move to one of the other many shows,films from Jim Henson. Been A Kid in the late 1970’s into 1980’s outside all the cult cartoons such as Ulysses 31, He-Man, etc… you could bet your bottom dollar your daily viewing would have been taken up by either The Muppets, Sesame Street or Graggle Rock. Whilst The Muppets catered for all round comedy satire for all ages, Sesame Street with it’s educational values and Fraggle Rock was more like Dr Seuss esque with its environmentalism, prejudice but done in a fun way, song dance.
A few years ago The Weinstein Company where interested in making a feature length version of the series but that fell through but Deadline are reporting the idea of making Fraggle Rock is alive again with New Regency acquiring the rights. It was no surprise this project has been revived anything with an iconic name on it like Jim Henson on it the big boys in Hollywood love that.If I can remember rightly Fraggle Rock was aired at first on Saturday afternoons on ITV first on just after World Of Sport before dad was able to ‘relax’ and enjoy the A-Team or Baywatch eventually moving to Sundays, the Fraggles where a group of small creatures who lived underground in Fraggle Rock. They shared there home with even small green worklike creature called Doozers and on the surface the UK version was a old Light house (near Falmouth, Cornwall) where an retired sailor played by Fulton McKay lived with his dog sprocket which was eventually taken over PK his nephew played by Gregory’s Girl Gordon Sinclair.
Fraggle Rock may have seemed aimed at younger audiences described by Henson as “a high-energy, raucous musical romp. It’s a lot of silliness. It’s wonderful.” While the program was accessible to audiences of all ages, it used the fantasy creatures as an allegory to deal with serious issues such as prejudice, spirituality, personal identity, environment, and social conflict. To many now you could call it The Muppets on acid it was a little darker than the muppets but when your under 10 you couldn’t care less!New Regency are responsible for the current Alvin in The Chipmunks feature film franchise leaves a little anxious on how the company may approach the Fraggle Rock film hopefully not the fart joke infested cgi type music style Alvin and Co have turned out if it does we’re in trouble!
So are you an adult who was brought up on Fraggle Rock? Should the go for the puppets and human style as seen in The Muppets and the original tv series? Or the cgi style characters which have seen 2 childrens cartoons been destroyed on the big screen ala Alvin and The Chipmunks & Yogi Bear?
