Iconic Prince Charles Cinema risks to close down due to new landlord clause

The iconic Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square, a cornerstone of London’s film culture, is facing the threat of closure.
The beloved venue, described by Quentin Tarantino as his favorite cinema in London, could be forced to shut down due to a contentious redevelopment break clause. According to the cinema’s Instagram account, the clause โ demanded by new landlord Zedwell LSQ Ltd and its parent company Criterion Capital โ would allow the lease to be terminated with just six months’ notice.
The cinema, which has been a cultural hub since 1962, is rallying support through a petition opposing the clause. So far, 6,588 supporters have signed, and the number keeps growing by the minute.
As one of the last independent cinemas in London, the Prince Charles Cinema offers a diverse array of screenings, from cult classics to contemporary hits, attracting local fans and international visitors. Beyond its programming, itโs a cherished institution for film lovers worldwide, fostering a sense of community among audiences and filmmakers alike.
Celebrated filmmakers, including Paul Thomas Anderson, have lauded the Prince Charles Cinema as a vital institution, calling it “a place in my heart” for its people, programming, and unique atmosphere. Its future now hinges on public support and the outcome of negotiations.
