High-Rise New UK Trailer Forebodes High Society At War

Some may call him the “love child of Ballard”, Ben Wheatley and JG Ballard are like a match made in heaven, High-Rise seems the perfection The Borg lived for in Star Trek. Next month High-Rise will arrive in UK cinemas and today a new trailer unveils High society living in luxury as class war,mania, narcissism and power failure unravels around them.

Ahead of it’s UK cinematic release the promotion for Ballard’s cult class war novel seems to go from strength to strength capturing the era (1975), whilst indicating the dark undertones of the story.

High-Rise sees us head back to 1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing (Tom Hiddleston) moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home.

Ben Wheatley is like Ballard re-incarnated his cinematic vision suits Ballard vision for pen to paper, possibly why many people love him, understand his style when others are puzzled. His knack to mix genres naturally is second to none,he encapsulates the mindset of human society, what’s wrong and it’s manipulation attributes. Dystopian society never felt so cold, calculated but ironically so up to date as many believe a class war thanks to Conservative government is happening now.

High-Rise is set for a UK cinema release of 18th March,On 19th February you can catch the film at Glasgow Film Festival . The film co-stars Luke Evans,Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Elisabeth Moss.
