Gremlins 3 In The Works With Chris Columbus To Direct
It has been confirmed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Gremlins 3 is officially in the works, with Chris Columbus, writer of the original film, returning to produce and direct, and Steven Spielberg back as executive producer through his company, Amblin Entertainment.
This announcement was made by Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday. Columbus will team up with Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein to write the new instalment. The film will also see the likes of Kristie Macosko Krieger, Holly Bario, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe joining as producers.
The original Gremlins, released in 1984, was directed by Joe Dante and proved to be a box office success, grossing $151 million domestically on a $11 million budget. Its sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, received a mixed reception from audiences upon its release in 1990 but has later gone on to gain a cult following. The sequel, once again directed by Dante, was not written by Columbus and only made $41 million at the box office.
The original concept of a gremlin dates back to the 1920s, when failures in Royal Air Force planes were jokingly blamed on the creatures. Children’s author Roald Dahl would later publish a book in 1943 called The Gremlins, which Walt Disney considered adapting, but nothing came from this.
Since the early 90s, the franchise has stayed mostly quiet until Warner Bros and Amblin brought it back to life with an animated series for Max titled Secrets of the Mogwai. The series essentially acted as a test to see whether there was renewed interest in the franchise with modern audiences. This, alongside Gremlins 2’s cult status, which has even been endorsed by director Quentin Tarantino, has shown a gradual increase in excitement for the series over the last 30 years. Now, with this third film set for a late 2027 release, the franchise will have its first theatrical instalment in 37 years.
Gremlins 3 is set to be released on 19th November, 2027.
