God’s Soldier Review

It’s Nun carnage in Thailand, an established mix of action and faith crossing paths in this story of a grown up orphan seeking revenge on her family’s assassin Steiner (William Baldwin).

Twelve years earlier a group of militants arrive at a remote Thai village looking for a special child, a golden child if you will; with a unique kind of blood running through her veins. She’s found, then escapes as everyone else is slaughtered. the opening hits hard setting the scene for what’s to come.

In Bangkok hiding, now a sister of mercy nurse for the underprivileged, Gina (Carolina Carlsson) is located by Steiner’s menacing scouts and is paid a visit by the devil himself.

Cue wide-eyed aggressive acts of vengeance in an overlong, ridiculous plotted scenario also involving another youth with a magical blood type, whom Gina is protecting with help from above and a crate load of arsenal.

Gina is no Ballerina (from the world of John Wick) she still possesses decent moves, can crack a skull and snap limbs in combat whilst resourcefully running around shooting and dodging bullets. Her quieter moments are rare, suffering from bouts of PTSD flashbacks of that childhood trauma.

Of German and Swedish heritage Carolina Carlsson (Kingslayer, 2022) as Gina  definitely accomplishes believability in motion and acting in some extraordinary circumstances. Throughout the movie you get to know her and care for the outcome that Gina becomes embrioled in, recalling her past and doing what’s right.

At one point being left for dead, strung up on an elevated cross as a messiah in blood, manages to release herself to extract further brutal revenge before saying innocuous lines to her victims such as; there’re 128ways to make a neurological system react, I know them all.

Some may be fans of the Baldwin brothers, many are not. Each with variable careers, as a collective Daniel, Stephen, William ‘Dad’ of course Alec have had their rollercoaster moments of true success. Once super cool, sexy slimeball William Baldwin (Flatliners, 1990. Sliver, 1993) is charismatic enough as villain Steiner, he’s on the phone alot too, but most notable is his vicious, provocative offsider Sebastian played by unknown Chiara Ferrara.

Filmed in authentic locations, efficient filmmakers have created an equally watchable and somewhat ‘god’ awful movie with a few well orchestrated action scenes that elevate it from a total .
