The 1970’s brought us Blaxploitation film genre, a genre born out of the mainstream Hollywood’s lack of connection with Black people. 40 years on we live in an era of reboots, remakes and later this year Superfly will be returning to our big screens.
It won’t be Shaft, Coffy or Cleopatra Jones, the hip sounds of the genre are more mainstream. Hipsters rather than players, pimps, and hustlers now roam. Can the tropes that made the genre so popular still deliver or even be popular as some of those tropes naturally now part of mainstream cinema?
In 1972 Superfly was one of the film that helped define a genre in its characters, look, sound, and feel. Now reimagined with Director X, director of legendary music videos (Drake, Rihanna), introducing it to a new generation. From Harlem down south to Atlanta as X stating the culture of the destinations has changed drastically.
Now the Georgian capital might be renowned for the likes of The Walking Dead, it’s also the place to base when paying homage to Blaxploitation classic. Reflecting the culture but now will go international as well as modern technology aka Cryptocurrency.

Superfly will be released in UK and Irish Cinemas from 21st September (15th June in the U.S).
The cast also includes Jason Mitchell, Michael Kenneth Williams, Lex Scott Davis, Jacob Ming-Trent, and Jennifer Morrison.
