Carl Erik Rinsch’s 47 Ronin movie project looks like its starting to take a little shape now after several years in development hell with Keanu Reeves been on the project virtually day one the Asian samurai warrior movies has now added 4 more cast members. Japanese actors Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi, Hiroyuki Sanada and Kou Shibasaki have all joined the cast according to Variety which means theres at least another 42 Ronin warriors to be casted!
47 ronin is one of Universal Pictures main tentpole movies for release in November 2012 an period action movie about warriors who seek vengence against a overlord who banished and killed their masters. This will be an wpic movie and the movies screenwriter Chrs Morgan described the movie as “great, Gladiator-esque, 300-like big action movie with samurai and ninja.” plus it will be a 3D movie as well!
If your not familar with Asian or Japanese Cinema you maybe unsure who these actors are. Sanada maybe the most recognisable to Western Film & Tv fans as he played Dougen in the final season of LOST but has also played in The Last Samurai as well Danny Boyle’s Sunshine.Asian Film fans will recognise Asano especially as he played titular roles in Ichi the Killer, Mongol and Zatoichi all movies which have been popular or have cult status among The west’s Asian movie fans, he is also in the upcoming Thor movie too. For fans of Babe, The Brother’s Bloom and she appears in Norwegian Wood the movie adaption of the Haruki Murakami novel which is released on 11th March (UK), which starred Kickuchi as for Shibasaki will be known for playing one of the students in the cult Japanese movie Battle Royale.
Actually casting well known established Japanese actors in this epic movie is a right direction for the movie plus there all actors who have appeared in various Hollywood movies, so maybe throw in a few bigger names people will get excited even more about this project. One of those names been thrown into the rumourmixer is Ken Watanabe but at this point its is only a rumour but if its true it will be a good one! So for now its great to see the project finally taking more steps towards reality.
