First Look: Philomena Cunk Returns In Cunk On Cinema

Where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us? These are the questions Philomena Cunk will set out to tackle in Cunk on Cinema, the latest addition to the critically acclaimed mockumentary series from Diane Morgan and Charlie Brooker, which we are now getting a first look at.

The three-part series for the BBC and Netflix will examine the world’s love affair with movies, covering everything from the invention of the camera to the New Wave filmmakers of the 60s, right up to the arrival of CGI and the future of AI.

Cunk (Diane Morgan) will attempt to demystify it all with the help of several cinematic experts, including, but not limited to, director Michael Bay (Bad Boys, Transformers), multi-award winning actor Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock), Oscar-nominated composer Daniel Pemberton (Project Hail Mary), screenwriter Steven E. de Souza (Die Hard, Commando), and Oscar-nominated cinematographer Seamus McGarvey (Atonement).

Other contributors from across the industry will include critic Mark Kermode, filmmaker Mark Cousins, Sight and Sound magazine managing editor Isabel Stevens, Empire Magazine editor-at-large Helen O’Hara, Screen International critic Catherine Bray, and BFI curator of silent film Bryony Dixon.

Brooker leads a team of writers for the long-awaited new series, including Ben Caudell, Erika Ehler, Eli Goldstone, Jason Hazeley, Dan Maier, Diane Morgan, Joel Morris, Michael Odewale, Kali Varghese, and Sam Ward. Al Campbell directs, with Brooker, Morgan, Jessica Rhoades, and Sam Ward serving as Executive Producers.

Cunk on Cinema is preceded by global cult classics including Cunk on Life, Cunk on Earth, Cunk on Shakespeare, and Cunk on Britain.

The new series will debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two in the UK and Ireland, and will be available to stream on Netflix everywhere else. A release date is yet to be announced.
