Friday 21st June is Father’s Day here in the UK, which is not long away. We may not be going out as much with lockdown still in place or the shops we want to go to are still closed. This doesn’t mean your dad has to miss out.

PARASITE (2019)

Bong-Joon-Ho’s award winning satirical thriller surprised many winning all the accolades especially the Oscars. The Kim family are close. All four live in a tiny basement flat and all four are unemployed. JOKER (2019)

It was probably the most divisive film of 2019, be we loved it. An original, standalone story based on the man who would become Batman’s arch-nemesis, the Joker, not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. LE MANS ’66(2019)

If he enjoys fast cars, he’ll love this one.starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon Based on a true story, an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby and his British driver, Ken Miles, are dispatched by Henry Ford II with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new race car with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship. 1917 (2019)

It was Parasite’s nearest contender in the awards especially The Oscar. Sam Mendes film was such a personal film to the director, inspired by his grandfather’s experience in World War One. A one take film shot by the legendary Roger Deakins (Blade Runner, Shawshank Redemption, Sicario, Skyfall).At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. TOP GUN (1986)

This film may not be loved by everyone, there is many dads who love entering in the ‘danger zone’. Val Kilmer and a very young Tom Cruise was a ‘blockbuster’ in it’s day, with action, drama, romance and much more cheese that earn this film it’s cult status stripes. Tony Scott’s film, we find ourselves at The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots. RIO GRANDE (1950)

If your dad loves Westerns he will probably love vintage John Wayne and this film is considered as one of his most underrated westerns, especially with John Ford. Part of the “Cavalry Trilogy,” which includes Fort Apache (1948) and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949). Maureen O’Hara also stars in the first of five filmes she made with John Wayne. If you love seige films this is one of the best as Wayne as Lt. Col. Kirby Yorke, attached to the Texas frontier in 1879 to protect settlers from attacks by Apaches.

THE SPECIALISTS (1971)

Does he like his Westerns with a slice of Italian ala Spaghetti Western? This is one of the best, from Sergio Corbucci, the legendary director of Django, also starring French legend Johnny Hallyday. He plays Notorious gunfighter Hud Dixon who arrives in Blackstone, a town where his brother was wrongfully accused of robbing a bank and lynched for it. He seeks revenge.

POLICE STORY / POLICE STORY 2

No one does action and slapstick comedy than Hong Kong screen legend Jackie Chan. Impeccable choreographed martial-arts sequences with dangerous action scene, all stunts performed by Jackie himself. You could say Tom Cruise must be inspired by Chan. Police Story and Police Story 2 are probably considered as some of his best, certainly for pure action. In Police Story he plays “super cop” Chan Ka-Kui, who goes up against a notorious crime lord. In Police Story 2 he must face explosive experts who threaten to blow up buildings around the city.

MANDY (2018)

Was your dad a bit of an old stoner? Like his horror over the top and stylish? Get him Mandy starring Nicolas Cage who has a lot of rage in this one.He’s intense and when Cage is let loose he’s simply wonderful. In this one we find ourselves in 1983, he plays Red a lumberjack who stays in the middle of knowhere with his artistic girlfriend Mandy (Andrea Riseborough). DIEGO MARADONA (2019)

He maybe a patron saint for his glorious double against England in the 1986 World Cup. You can’t deny the talent of Diego Maradona had when he played. Directed by Asif Kapadia who brought us Senna and Amy,what a gripping, extraordinary story. Usually docs of people they are sadly passed, Maradona is still with us.
