Film Review – Nemesis (2021)

Written by Adam Stephen Kelly (Done In, Kill Kane) and directed by James Crow (House of Salem), the film stars genre veterans Billy Murray (Rise of the Footsoldier), Frank Harper (The Football Factory), Nick Moran (Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels) and Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott (The Krays Dead Man Walking). The film will be released on DVD and across Digital Download platforms from 29th March.

Synopsis
When underworld kingpin John Morgan (Billy Murray) returns to London with his wife Sadie (Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott) from their perfect life abroad, a feud is reignited with vengeful cop Frank Conway (Nick Moran), who is obsessed with bringing him down. Meanwhile, pressure from big boss Damien Osbourne (Bruce Payne) only adds unnecessary heat to the rising tension within the family business, with Morgan’s brother Richard (Frank Harper) and nephew Eddie (Danny Bear) constantly at each other’s throats.

John aims to bring the Morgan gang together at a party in his plush apartment, where they are set to meet his daughter Kate’s (Ambra Moore) new girlfriend Zoe (Lucy Aarden). All is not what it seems, and as the night progresses, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues ending in revenge and murder. As the family are trapped in their own home by a gang of heavily armed intruders.

This is a slow movie with a drawn-out plot and some extremely questionable scenes and a suspense themed music background which seems to never quit.

The film starts with big-time gangster John Morgan returning to London, not sure I understood why at this time, and 20 minutes on I am still not sure what I am watching. Only 1hour and 8 minutes to go.

This film did not keep our attention, and the phones and scrolling soon pursued, which did not help with trying to keep track of what was going on and not helped by the slow dialogue.

There were some very questionable scenes in the film and one of which involved John’s wife Sadie. While waiting for her daughter to arrive so they can go out, Zoe, the daughter’s girlfriend turns up. I am still not sure why she turned up, as I was blown away by the fact the mother, for no other reason than to show her body off, was standing in the kitchen waiting for her daughter almost naked, wearing lovely black knickers and a sheer lace robe covering absolutely nothing, and just in case we did not get enough of an eye full, we are treated to a back shot too. Amazing body, not quite sure what that had to do with the film, as Zoe comes in, marvels at the body and leaves again!

It becomes clear early on at the dinner scene the daughter’s girlfriend is not who she seems and is a victim of human trafficking, which John is responsible for, and has turned her quite disturbed and a possible trigger for some.

The film was based on an idea by Billy Murray and would probably work very well if the film were cut into a 30-minute episode of The Bill. Not a film I will be watching again.
