Film Review - Mortal (2020)

An American with an unusual presence around the Norwegian countryside is only the beginning of this fable with a highs and lows to contend with alongside filtered in romance.

Nat Wolff as Eric, a fire-starter, walking defibrillator, controller of weather with emotions able to set off lightning bolts through the sky or high winds reacting to his rage.

He is known to locals through a fatality he was blamed for, now returning from hiding out only to cause another accidental death just by touch.

Befriended by caregiver Christine (Iben Akerlie) who was assigned to talk to him alone in police holding room, she ends up helping him on the outside where even more god like activity kicks in.

Considering this part of the world is that of the ‘Thor’ legend, he is compared to the god of thunder by media then a plot twist concerning a hidden crypt of hidden artefacts, folds into a finale filtering in religious aspects.

Slow as it may be, bleak or grim even, i liked it, keeping me interested through the Christine and Eric seemingly doomed friendship.

There’s a spectacular helicopter crash and intense bridge showdown filmed with cinematic sharpness.

Wolff is open to interpretation, his performance wavers into believability but suited for the outside the box role whilst sharing decent chemistry with excellent Norway girl, Akerlie.

Director Andre Ovredal, was responsible for impressive paranormal shocker Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) using his deliberately simmering storytelling again here, however fans of his fantasy classic Trollhunter (2010) may be bored without as much action.

Mortal, above average enlightening unique tale I wholly recommend.
