Film Review – How To Deter A Robber (2021)

Lewd, bright, funny Christmas time crime caper involving bumbling robbers and a house full of booby traps, no this is not an official Home Alone sequel, but with a little tweaking it surely could be.

Be that as it may, this begins when a young couple take off from a progressively awkward family gathering to letting themselves in to the house next door to where the lights are on but nobody home.

Madison (Vanessa Marano) and vacant boyfriend Jimmy (Benjamin Papac) party at the neighbour’s abandoned abode drinking until crashing, then waking the following day to a ramshackle mess.

Thieves have also let themselves in, whilst the two had passed out.

Local North Wisconsin police on the scene blame the teens with no real signs of forced entry except from them, illegally partying.

Uncle Andy (Chris Mulkey) decides to take in the pair at his house giving them a break from jittery relatives because the actions of Madison have had trust altering consequences. During their time-out, the trio become victims in a string of robberies being visited by the very same bandits.

Swaying between, satire, horror and thriller, this hectic mishmash is worth a watch for veteran Mulkey and hypnotic Marano, they share terrific, sweet cross generational chemistry as uncle and niece. The amateur burglars are appropriately bizarre characters, kind of hospitable home invaders with personal issues out for all to see.

Their rough around the edges charm works in context within this uneven, but entertaining film.
