Film Review - Bodies, Bodies, Bodies (2022)

The one good thing been here in the UK there is always films that release in the USA, those reviews give us an insight what to expect. When it comes to Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies it’s a lazy piece of film-making disguised as an arthouse horror film.

Like any film I always give it a chance before giving judgement. A24 Films has been a distributor that’s given us many reliable releases. Here in the UK this film was released by Sony Pictures Releasing. Sadly the film lacking more unoriginality and scare factor you expect from horror films.

The film stars Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), Maria Bakalova (Borat sequel), Myha’la Herrold (Industry TV show), Chase Sui Wonders (On The Rocks), Rachel Sennott( Shiva Baby) with Lee Pace and Pete Davidson.

Bodies Bodies Bodies is based on a short story by Kristen Roupenian called Cat Person. It was published in 2017 by the New Yorker, Sony Pictures describe the film as a ‘slasher comedy’ . Drink, weed and cocaine flowing when a group of 20 something rich young friends head to a family mansion. Here they hold a hurricane party and at the party they play a game called ‘Bodies, Bodies, Bodies’ . That dangerous game goes wrong, very wrong cue the killing.

One thing Reijn’s film does really well is within minutes we hate everyone one of the Gen Z characters. I must have missed the punchline when it comes to comedy? It’s not remotely funny, it does pretend to be ‘satire’. More obnoxious behaviour leaving you laughing at yourself ‘Why am I watching this film?’ If they wanted comedy, they have Bakalova in the cast who was given very little time to shine or even showcase her comedic chops

Like every generation we have all been young at one time. What we want to do changes every decade. 21^st century kids seem to be more interested lots of sex, lots of booze, plenty of drugs. Not forgetting living their whole lives in a false social media world and finding lost in the real world. As they say it’s good to talk, face to face rather than how many likes you get online.

The film kicks-off with the girls partying like it’s the end of the world. Davidson and Pace joining in, wrecking the mansion grounds before they decide to move indoors and play the game. The bodies hit the floor, the accusations fly and the script is exposed as probably the only thing that’s actually feels slashed. The short running time (90 minutes) says we won’t learn much each of the characters. It’s a film the minimum you know about them, the better we they are all obnoxious humans.

It’s when the Gen Z jargon starts to spout out, it’s when you might get lost in the momentum. This is meant to be when we should be laughing our heads off, the only person being gaslighted is myself and you the viewer.

Bodies Bodies Bodies is not a horror or slasher, nor does it have any scary moments. Just a film of narcissistic, anxiety ridden teens who feel like tired stereotypes. That lacks style and structure, dull, dull, dull.
