Every Family has a story to tell which if you look at it, it’s a true this is also the case in Billy Bob Thornton‘s new directed film Jayne Mansfield’s Car which today has a International trailer. Until today it’s a film I haven’t heard of until now and even on paper it doesn’t look like a film that may interest you a lot but the cast is the pulling power of this film which pulls you in. A list of heavyweight names here Robert Duvall, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Ray Stevenson, Robert Patrick, Frances O’Connor, Shawnee Smith and Tippi Hedren, there is also Mr Thornton himself.
Set in 1969, Jayne Mansfield’s Car tells the story of a man (Robert Duvall) whose leaves him moves to Britain marries another man (John Hurt), 20-30 years later she dies and at her request her body is returned to Alabama. With the funeral to take place in her home town her English family come to USA and meet with her American family resulting in cultural clashes between the 2 families.
Jayne Mansfield’s Car seems to be a like the famous football quote, A game of 2 halves. First half seems to be more playing on those cultural clashes giving the film some humour whilst the second half of the film looks like a heartfelt drama what looks like to be playing on the father son relationship. The film’s title maybe a little deceiving as you’ll see in the trailer Jayne Mansfield’s Car seem to be one of those travelling sinister attractions rather than about the actress, though looking at the trailer the attraction could be a turning point to films storyline. The film has really only played at this year’s years Berlin Film Festival and the reviews have been mixed, not actually saying it’s a bad film just not Thornton’s best directed film (Daddy and Them his last film in 2001, some regard Sling Blade his best film) but the cast help keep the viewer interested in the film overall.
Jayne Mansfield Car is an old fashioned style film, a style we don’t see much these days and with Thornton’s desire to release the film cinematically could be the reason why there’s no UK or American distributor just yet. The trailer below is for the Australian release of the film which will be direct to DVD early 2013.
