Emily In Paris: A Pari…Sasterous Season 2 [SPOILER ALERT]

Emily In Paris Season 2

Emily’s troubled visit to the city of light continues for another season with her constantly putting herself in uncomfortable situations. Just like season 1, Emily in Paris is binge-worthy mainly for its clichés and for creating an urge to steal styling ideas from the series. It also brings to the fore stereotypical expectations from an average non- French person’s point of view, such as women going for young lovers and the systematic habit of the French with ‘la bise’. As you click ‘next episode’, the more eye-rolling it gets.

Although Paris is baptized as a romantic city, the series does not depict true love. Instead, the protagonist gets herself into awkward situations with almost everyone she meets and everyone she already knows, makes no effort to learn French, there’s no inciting incident, and it kind of gets off the point. There’s nothing surprising really. Yes, it’s a feel-good season in certain aspects, but the attempt to over-exaggerate a romantic Elysium undoubtedly gets hold of the wrong end of the stick. With regards to the plot, there’s nothing astonishing. It’s just Emily’s boring love life along her eccentric closet haunted by a dull hairstyle. The best aspect of season 2 is just the outstanding outfits and the idyllic sceneries of Paris.

Rewatching the series will make you cringe. Emily turns out to be the Judas who continuously sweeps every problem under the carpet and has no awareness of real friendship or handling situations properly. That’s a story we’ve heard before. On top of that, the French language becomes Sisyphean labor to Emily and her interaction with the language -especially in season 2- belongs to the past. And honestly, hearing Emily saying ‘merci’ countless times after interacting with Parisians for so long, makes her character look insanely idiotic and exaggerated.

With pure honesty, season 2 was highly anticipated and sadly ended up being very disappointing. It is a flash in the pan rom-com with a doubtful future where its unnecessarily extra cast will most likely turn you into the ‘confused Travolta’ GIF. Whether it’s the producers that got overexcited with the success of season 1 or whether they thought that the extravagant outfits would be a good idea to throw dust in the viewers’ eyes in overlooking the lack of ideas, certainly, they are just chasing their tails.

The chaotic plot can be described as something like accidentally leaving a song on loop while simultaneously struggling with a frozen screen. It’s the perfect fit for a mainstream audience, but don’t expect to be amazed. It is a recycled version of season 1 that leaves me questioning as to what it tried to communicate. Although producers are surely rubbing their hands, hopefully for seasons 3 and 4, they will put their excitement aside to enrich their creativity.
