Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Will Be ‘A Sequel That’s A Prequel’

Edge of Tomorrow was a unique movie, with a fantastic cast including Tom Cruise, reliable as is Emily Blunt. It was a promising movie with an intriguing narrative of time travelling to fight an alien invasion. A compelling movie that was like a ‘lesson’ for Cruise character who was cowardly. Directed by Doug Liman who crafted a story, that kept you curious from start to finish and even when to see the same scene over and over, you never got bored.
We know Edge Of Tomorrow 2 is in the works and at this stage we don’t know much about what the premise may be about. Christopher McQuarrie is involved in the screenwriting along with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, with Cruise and Blunt returning to star and Liman directing. Now things are in development the buzz for information on the movie is starting to build, director Liman in an interview with Collider revealed why he’s excited about the sequel…
“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”
Liman basically saying the sequel will function like a prequel which if he pulls it off, in his words revolutionise how people make sequels. A sequel movie will never be the same. Some of you maybe screaming Godfather Part 2 which Robert De Niro played a young Correlone in flashbacks, however, Liman does sound like he’s going to try something a bit more different. Something unexpected, a movie not really seen in mainstream cinema, a big ambitious risk, but one we’re intrigued to follow. As Cruise character achieved what he wanted to do and defeat the enemy where can Edge Of Tomorrow 2 actually go to? The loop was reset, does this mean we may go back to the point where the first movie kicked off? A lot of creativity we could see this one work.
Patience will be the virtue here as no date has been set for the start of production or release as everyone involved has a very busy schedule already pencilled in with Cruise and Blunt about to work on Mission Impossible 6 and Mary Poppins Returns. Liman himself has a number of new projects lined up with the likes of Justice League Dark, but as interested parties have aired their commitment space will be made to fit this movie in.
