DVD Review – Suite Française (2015)

Based on the best selling book by Irene Nemirovsky, written whilst she was in a concentration camp in Auschwitz, Suite Française gives an insight into the lives of the residence of a French town as it gets invaded and taken over by the Germans.

The story mainly focuses on Lucille Angellier (Michelle Williams), a young married woman trapped living with her mother in law, Madame Angellier (Kristen Scott Thomas) as she awaits news of her husband who is being held captive as a prisoner of war.

As the Second World War breaks out and the Germans begin to take over the town, a romance begins to blossom between Lucille and Bruno Von Faulk (Matthias Shoenaerts), the German officer residing in the Angellier household. But, before long their romance is threatened by the outbreak of war.

Michelle Williams gives a brilliant performance as Lucille Angellier, proving romance is her strong point. Matthias Schoenaerts is definitely one to watch, both for his acting and hot factor. And Kristen Scott Thomas once again proves she can pull off any role.

The only downfall of this film was the lack of romance. From the trailer Suite Française is hyped up to be fairly romantic, alas aside from a few scenes, it seems to lack in the romance department. However, the film was still a good one if films of World War 2 are of interest.
