DVD Review – Love, Rosie (2014)

Based on the book Where Rainbows End (which later got changed to Love, Rosie,) by Cecilia Ahern, Love, Rosie tells the story of Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) best friends since they were five. The book is set out in a series of letters and emails so it was interesting to see it played out on film.

Love, Rosie spans a decade with Rosie and Alex’s friendship growing into more, as they grow older. Of course with these sorts of stories it takes each character a while to realize who they really want to be with was right in front of them, which allows obstacles to get in the way.

On a drunken night at Rosie’s 18th birthday, she drunkenly kisses Alex but has forgotten by the next morning. With the end of year dance coming up, Alex decides to take Bethany whilst Rosie takes Greg. This leads to Rosie sleeping with Greg with comical consequences.

Needles to say Rosie’s dream of going to Columbia and owning her own hotel soon goes out the window when she finds out she’s pregnant- with Greg’s baby who of course flees the country as soon as he finds out.

With Greg nowhere to be seen, and Alex off to Harvard to become a doctor, it seems Rosie is left to raise baby Katie alone, aside from her family and new friend Ruby (Jaime Winstone).

Through letters, emails and texts the two friends relationships continue to be told, and through marriage, divorce and becoming parents, it becomes clear that they’re meant for one another, which leads to a happy ending.

Although a bit predictable, you can’t help but root for the two friends to be together from the beginning of the film. Lily Collins and Sam Claflin acting and chemistry was believable as Rosie and Alex. Along with supporting talent from Jaime Winstone and Tamsin Ergerton, Love, Rosie is one of those films to sit and watch with your girls.
