The Princess and the Frog live-action in the works

Princess Tianaโ€™s wish to become human is finally being granted in a new live-action adaptation of Disneyโ€™s 2009 animation, The Princess and the Frog.ย At the forefront of the project will beย Colman Domingo, who is in talks to co-write the script with Tony-nominated directorย Robert Oโ€™Hara.ย

Disney has been churning out live-action adaptations of their animated films, which have been met with a mixed bag of reactions. Last yearโ€™s Lilo & Stitch grossed over $1 billion at the global box office, while their most recent release, Moana, has so far proven to be a flop for the studio.ย

Domingoโ€™s adaptation will takeย a moreย Cruellaย andย Maleficent-like approach, reimaginingย the original filmโ€™s protagonist, Princess Tiana, in a new story rather than a direct remake.

The Princess and the Frog is a 2009 animated film that was celebrated as Disneyโ€™s return to traditional hand-drawn animation. Set in New Orleans, the film follows Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), an ambitious young girl on the brink of opening her own restaurant. When kissing a frog prince (Bruno Campos) accidentally transforms her into a frog as well, the pair set off on a bayou adventure in search of the powerful Mama Odie who supposedly can turn them back into humans.ย

The film has become a huge favourite amongst fans – in 2009, the film grossed $279 million from its $100 million budget, but has lived a huge life from DVD and Blu-ray sales, as well as on Disney+.

It is still very early days for the project, with Domingo and Oโ€™Hara still needing to close the deal with Disney.ย
