The awards season has finally arrived, new trailers are coming thick and fast with each new one coming with their own Oscar potential. After gun-slinging in The Magnificent Seven, Denzil Washington heads behind (& front of )the lens for Fences which is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson. Paramount Pictures has released the UK Trailer, a story of a man who once had a dream struggling to provide for his family
Imagery for the movie arrived online a very longtime ago and we waited and waited leaving for trailer leaving us a sense of doubt. Finally we have the video and Washington looks like he will deliver, a story he played on the stage and again on the big screen with Viola Davis joining him once again. As you’ll see in the trailer it will be a film with plenty of thought and emotion which will relate to anyone who had the big dream once.
We don’t have an official synopsis for Fences yet, however we do have the synopsis of the play the film is based on…
Troy Maxson (Washington), is a strong man, a hard man. He has had to be to survive. Troy Maxson has gone through life in an America where to be proud and black is to face pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960s, a spirit that is changing the world Troy Maxson has learned to deal with the only way he can, a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less.
Fences apparently one of 10 August Wilson projects Washington hopes to work on and looking at the trailer you can see why he’s a big fan. Wilson actually created a script before his death which has been used here and what looks a faithful rendition. There’s plenty of intensity on show here with one of the most powerful monologues you’ll see in a long time but will The Oscars deliver diversity in its contenders?.
Fences doesn’t have a UK&Irish confirmed release date apart from 2017 (USA 25th December). The film also stars Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sydney.
