David Fincher to End Netflix Deal in 2027
David Fincher is set to end his exclusive deal with Netflix when it expires in 2027, bringing his formal partnership with the streaming giant to a close after more than a decade.
According to reports, the filmmaker will not renew his current agreement, although his departure does not necessarily mean the end of his relationship with Netflix. Sources cited in recent reporting indicate that Fincher is not moving to another studio and could continue to make projects for the streamer in the future.
Fincher’s relationship with Netflix dates back to House of Cards, on which he served as executive producer and directed the opening episodes. He later helped develop Mindhunter, directing several episodes of the crime drama, while also working on the animated anthology Love, Death & Robots.
His exclusive agreement, signed in 2020, produced three feature films for Netflix: Mank, The Killer and the upcoming The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. The latter, written by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, is scheduled for an IMAX release on 25 November before arriving on Netflix on 23 December.
The news comes as several other high-profile filmmakers and producers have also moved away from long-term Netflix arrangements, including Noah Baumbach, Shawn Levy and the Duffer Brothers.
For Fincher, however, the end of the deal may represent a change in structure rather than a complete break. Reports suggest the director does not currently feel the need to commit to another large overall agreement, leaving the door open for future collaborations with Netflix.
With The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth marking the final project under his current arrangement, Fincher’s next move remains open-ended.
