David Ayer updates on Suicide Squad Cut
After years of speculating, David Ayer has updated fans on his director’s cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad.
While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming A Working Man, Ayer had the opportunity to address the status of his version of the Suicide Squad.
When asked, Ayer promptly noted DC CEO James Gunn’s various projects: “When I did speak with James, he wanted to first get some scores on the board. DC has its history and its legacy, and it’s taking some work to reestablish that IP and get it moving in the direction they want. So it’s absolutely fair for them to do that.”
Ayer previously claimed to be “done” with DC but has also stated that his version of the film “deserves to be seen.” He seems to have faith in Gunn, predicting that the filmmaker will “have some real successes with the lanes he’s going down.”
Despite wishing to work on a director’s cut, Ayer has hinted at the unlikeliness of it ever materialising: “It’s not my IP, and it’s not my studio.”
An Ayer cut release may be in doubt. But fans successfully petitioned for DC to release the director’s cut of The Justice League. So, if there’s enough audience demand, nothing is impossible.
