Everything comes out in the blues as Netflix release the official first trailer for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Starring Viola Davis as the legendary ‘Mother Of the Blues‘ and Chadwick Boseman in his last ever film role.

The world would be an empty place without the blues. This film will chronicle the story of Gertrude ‘Ma’ Rainey, set during the 1920’s Chicago. Rainey an iconic name with in blues await to record which tensions rise amongst the band and Ma’s manager.

The film looks to cover a piece of musical history, the mechanics of a recording artist. Also looks to touch racism especially with Rainey’s manager who is white. Looks fantastic performances from Boseman and Davis, highlighting why this film will be one of Netflix’s runners for Oscar contention.

Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary โ€œMother of the Blues,โ€ Ma Rainey (Academy Awardยฎ winner Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studioโ€™s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman) โ€” who has an eye for Maโ€™s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry โ€” spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.

Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilsonโ€™s play, MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let societyโ€™s prejudices dictate their worth.Directed by George C. Wolfe and adapted for the screen by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is produced by Fences Oscarยฎ nominees Denzel Washington and Todd Black.

The film also stars Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige, and Dusan Brown.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will arrive on Netflix globally from 18th December.
