Dakota Johnson On Madame Web’s Failure: “It Wasn’t My Fault”
Currently on the promotion trail for her new film Materialists, star Dakota Johnson has taken some time to reflect on her foray into the comic-book world with last year’s Madame Web and why she thinks the film flopped. (via Deadline)
Speaking to The Los Angeles Times, Johnson said:
“It wasn’t my fault… There’s this thing that happens now where a lot of creative decisions are made by committee. Or made by people who don’t have a creative bone in their body. And it’s really hard to make art that way. Or to make something entertaining that way… And I think unfortunately with Madame Web, it started out as something and turned into something else. And I was just sort of along for the ride at that point. But that happens. Bigger-budget movies fail all the time.”
She added that she didn’t need to “have a Band-Aid over it” and that she wouldn’t necessarily be against doing something similar again in the future, adding: “There’s no part of me that’s like, ‘Oh, I’ll never do that again’ to anything. I’ve done even tiny movies that didn’t do well. Who cares?”
Based on the comics of the same name, and part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Madame Web (played by Johnson) is a paramedic called Cassandra Webb, who develops psychic abilities following an accident, making her see future events. Made for $ 80 million, the film only grossed $ 51.5 million worldwide and was slaughted by critics, including our own editor Scott J. Davis.
Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott also starred in the film.
Johnson’s new film, Materialists, opens in US cinemas on June 13th before its UK bow on August 15th.
