Interview: Christopher Andrews on Filming in Rural Ireland, The Cinematography, and The Use of Gaelic On “Bring Them Down”
The People’s Movies sat down with director Christopher Andrews to talk about his debut feature Bring Them Down, coming out on February 7 2025. The film, distributed worldwide by Mubi, stars Christopher Abbott (who recently starred in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things as Alfie Blessington) as a brilliant lead opposite Barry Keoghan (of Saltburn) in yet another scene-stealing role.
Set in rural Ireland, the movie focuses on an Irish shepherding family and the multiple conflicts they face in terms of family tensions and rivalries when it comes to their personal lives and farming work, with a particular focus on Michael (Christopher Abbott) and his nephew Jack (Barry Keoghan) who are both victims to the internal drama within their family and the chain of events that this rivalry starts and escalates as the film goes on.
In this interview, Christopher Andrews reflects on the importance of featuring Gaelic in the movie, especially in the conversations between the main character and his father, and why he felt compelled to do so from the very beginning of the project. He also shares his experience of filming in rural Ireland for the film and getting the actors to film with real-life animals to depict the reality of farming communities, as well as reflecting on the difficulties of filming on location in a shoot that required a lot of the scenes to take place – and be filmed – outside, oftentimes in the cold weather.
