We love to talk about those great movies from the past, how things were better back in those days compared to now, sadly alot of those great classic movies your probably too young have have had a opportunity to actually see that movie (or movies) on the big screen. But every once and a while especially around a particular anniversary a onceย in a life time opportunity comes to see that movie once again remastered and one of those movie has a woman who moonlighted with Bruce Willis in the 1980’s and The dude when he was starting and that movie is the stylish cult classicย THE LAST PICTURE SHOW has been digitally restored and will be back in cinemas from 15 April 2011.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW will return to cinema screens in Sony Picturesโ newly restored digital version of Peter Bogdanovichโs Director’s Cut.
Based on acclaimed writer Larry McMurtryโs novel and featuring a talent-laden cast, led by Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd and Timothy Bottoms, the title is a study of life in a small Texas town during the 1950s, and how characters’ lives intertwine. This frank, bittersweet drama of social and sexual mores follows the exploits and coming-of-age of two high school football stars. With its unforgettable swimming pool scene, the film involved the acting debut for the young Shepherd, who plays the townโs equally stunning and manipulative โit girlโ.
Released in 1971 to critical acclaim and public controversy, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW received eight Academy Award nominations (including โBest Pictureโ), winning the Oscars for โBest Actor in a Supporting Roleโ (Ben Johnson) and โBest Actress in a Supporting Roleโ (Cloris Leachman). The film also won three BAFTA awards for โBest Screenplayโ (Larry McMurtry, Peter Bogdanovich), โBest Supporting Actorโ (Ben Johnson) and โBest Supporting Actressโ (Cloris Leachman).
The new digital restoration from Sony Pictures showcases Robert Surteesโ crisp black and white cinematography and gives audiences the chance to experience the Directorโs Cut as it should be seen, back on the big screen.
THE LAST PICTURE SHOW will open from Friday 15 April 2011 at the BFI Southbank, Filmhouse Edinburgh, Irish Film Institute and key cities.
