Bob Fosse’s Cabaret Getting A 50th Anniversary Cinema Re-release!
When it comes to musicals Bob Fosse‘s Cabaret is considered one of the best, in 2022 it will celebrate a momentous birthday. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Oscar®-winning classic musical starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, Park Circus are set to be bringing the film back into cinemas next month.
The award winning film won 8 Academy Awards® – including Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Joel Grey, Best Director for Bob Fosse and Best Cinematography for Geoffrey Unsworth. Many may have seen the legendary stage version, what better time to see the film version, a film that many consider Minelli‘s best ever.
Whilst the set up of this film may shadow those musicals of the golden age of Hollywood. A daring film for the time set during the rise of Hitler’s Nazi Germany with Bisexual, Transgender dancers. Very few filmmakers these days would do this, it’s certainly a landmark film deserving of a another chance on the big screen!
CABARET brings 1931 Berlin to life inside and outside the Kit Kat Klub. There, starry eyed American Sally Bowles (Liza Minelli) and an impish emcee (Joel Grey) sound the call for decadent fun, while in the street the Nazi party is beginning to grow into a brutal political force. Into this heady world arrives British language teacher Brian Roberts (Michael York) who falls for Sally’s charm and soon, the two of them find themselves embroiled the turmoil and decadence of the era.
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Cabaret, it will be back in UK and Irish cinemas from 6th May. Check your local cinema listings for screenings.
