The Death Of Superman [rating=4]
Well DC, you’ve finally gone and done it. You’ve finally won me over after all these years with ‘The Death of Superman’.
The latest entry in the DC Animated Universe is full of fantastic action sequences with the whole Justice League laying the smackdown on Doomsday, but of course it’s the main event fight between Superman and the big bad that was the most thrilling of all. The animation in this feature, particularly in it’s fight sequences, is great. After their last film, ‘Batman Ninja’, it was clear that DC were on the right path and have really stepped up their game both in terms of storytelling and animation. It seems they have finally found the right formula for their films to please both fans and newcomers to the characters and their stories.
The first part of the film does well setting up the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane (played wonderfully by real life husband and wife duo Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romjin) while we are also introduced to the city of Metropolis through a variety of characters connected to Supes. It’s through these characters and their adoration and memories with the Man of Steel that truly bring home the emotion in the story. Things are looking great for everyone. Superman and Lois are getting closer, the Justice League have bonded to the point of being a family and Lex Luthor is under house arrest – so it was only a matter of time before something went wrong again. Enter Doomsday. The version of Doomsday we meet in this film differs greatly from the one seen in Zach Snyder’s ‘Batman v Superman’. Surprisingly he is far more frightening in this adaptation than his live-action/CGI counterpart. He is portrayed here as a mindless, bloodthirsty killing machine capable of nothing more than than to kill anyone in sight – he was perfect here. Silent and deadly.
I was entirely (and unexpectedly) really drawn into this film, more so than any of the other DC films I’ve seen thus far. It sets up everything perfectly in it’s 72 minute runtime and nothing feels rushed. It has the right balance of emotion and action to both tug on the emotions and keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m very much looking forward to the follow-up feature ‘Reign of Superman’ to see what happens next. If you check out the film then be sure to stick around for the extra scenes during the credits!
