Do disaster movies work on the small screen? If they’re good they do – unfortunately San Andreas is not nearly good enough to have much impact in the comfort of your own home. Luckily it does feature the ever likeable Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, making it at least watchable.

San Andreas tells the “story” of Ray Gains (Johnson), a helicopter rescue pilot who tries to save his estranged wife and daughter’s lives while… well, while the entirety of California is destroyed by the most powerful earthquake ever recorded. You’ve seen this sort of film before, usually directed by Roland Emmerich, and you know what to expect; adequate (albeit obviously CGI) special effects, buildings blowing up and endless people fruitlessly running from impending doom before being swept up by debris, waves, or flames.

The film isn’t particularly good but it is very, very stupid and this is where some fun can be had; whether it’s The Rock staring intently at the American flag, Paul Giamatti’s scientist telling people to get off a bridge that is already in the process of collapsing or Ioan Gruffudd pushing people pointlessly to their death just so we don’t like him .

Dwayne Johnson has yet to find a film to really show off what a good leading man he could be. I hope one day he leads a film worthy of his talents. San Andreas is distracting enough but it just isn’t interesting.
